About Augustino's

Dupage County Favorite Since 1978

Augustino’s first opened its doors in 1978 as an Italian Grocery store. Rows of specialty sauces, pasta and oils filled the shelves along with the usual convenience store items. The Deli cases were lined with carefully chosen meats and cheeses. Sandwiches were made using fresh sliced ingredients and piled high on fresh-baked artisan breads.

In the back, Augie and his wife Phyllis (known to all of us as ‘Ma’) and son Jerry added their own talents in creating classic Italian favorites: hand-rolled meatballs, sauces and dressings using family recipes, and iconic Chicago Italian Beef made using our own special blend of spices. Rows of imported pasta and specialties lined the shelves, but it was the sandwiches that people stood in line for. On Italian Beef days the line was out the door and on meatball days, they often ran out before the day was done!

Over forty years later, our menu has grown but we’re doing things the same way. Our commitment to value, quality, and service is still our first priority. All our meats, cheeses, and produce are specifically chosen for their flavor and quality. This attention to detail is evident every time you bite into an Augie’s sandwich.

What Makes Augie's So Special

Augustino’s success comes from our commitment to quality. All our Italian beef, roast beef, corned beef, sauces, gravy, and meatballs are made in house. They’re all made from scratch every day using the finest and freshest ingredients.

Even our family’s secret recipe for our homemade vinegar and oil dressing (lovingly referred to as Love Potion Number 9) is still made the same secret way, using the same secret handshake before every batch is made. We’re kidding about the handshake, but not about the secret ingredients.

Every week Jerry and his team select just the right seasonal produce. Meats and cheese are chosen for their flavor profiles and excellence.

Bread is delivered twice fresh daily, from local artisan bread makers. Each sandwich is created to order. Our pizzas, burgers and hot sandwiches were created with the same attention to detail that we started with almost four decades ago. You’ll know with every bite that each item was made with care and special attention.

Why a Rock & Roll Deli

In the late 1980s, thanks to a tip from a loyal customer, Augie and Jerry had the opportunity to purchase the piece of property located at the corner of St. Charles and Schmale Roads and move Augie’s to its present location. During the move, we transitioned to a full-time deli/sandwich shop with places for customers to sit down and dine in. Booths and tables were added. But how should we decorate the new space?

What you might now know is that while serving in the Korean War in the late ’50s, one of Augie’s jobs was to book musical acts for USO shows. Aug made arrangements for transportation and took care of the many details for these important spirit boosters. And when entertainment for the troops was scarce, Aug pulled together some of the guys and formed a small band, Augie jumping in to play his trumpet. And along the way, Aug collected memorabilia given to him from some of the acts that he booked!

20In the beginning, Augie’s personal memorabilia decorated the early walls of our new restaurant with tons of artifacts and items added over the years from customers and friends of Augustino’s. “Music and food have a universal language,” Augie’s has always said. Our fun authentic decor just seems to pair well with what we serve: authentic, honest, down-to-earth, feel good, great food.

Now, over four decades later years, West Chicago Augie’s boasts museum-quality memorabilia, while our store in Carol Stream has entire walls adorned with memorabilia from only Chicagoland bands and musicians! The dozens of vintage lunchboxes both stores were added thanks to Jerry and Cathy and Archie’s lunchbox he gave her for Mother’s Day one year.....but that’s another story!

Our People Are Just As Important

The other key ingredient to Augustino’s is our dedicated staff and loyal customers. At least 20% of Augie’s employees have been with the company for ten years or more, which is a testament to the fact that we attract and nurture loyalty. Our team members enjoy meeting and getting to know our customers. They know your name, they know your sandwich. You’re like family.

And speaking of family, we are proud that many of our customers have been friends and fans for generations. To hear "we've been coming to Augie's since we were little"' is music to our ears.

Providing our customers with tasty, safe and affordable options is one of the most rewarding things we've been able to do. From burgers to hot dogs, cold deli sandwiches to a wide variety of grill and classics, we're very proud of our Gluten Free menu. We even make a mean pizza!

While we are not a Gluten-Free environment we do take special precautions to guard against cross-contamination. Our staff is very knowledgeable about our options and can guide you through any questions you might have.

The Story of the Little White Cup

Sometime between 2007 and 2008 we watched as a customer struggle between a cup of water in a styrofoam cup or purchasing bottled water. The idea of putting either into the earth really bothered this customer. Her struggle led us to look at that little white cup differently. We did a little math and realized that between our two locations we were putting on average over 10,000 styrofoam cups per month into the earth.

And that was just cups for water.

We not only launched a search for a more earth-friendly cup for water, but we also made it our mission to replace as many disposable products with sustainable options. On Earth Day 2008 we launched our products and we became one of the first quick-serve/fast-casual restaurants in Illinois to bring such products to our area and the reason they became available to other businesses. And to this day customers reach out to us to find out the names of our vendors for use in their own offices and schools.

As a company, we continue to be committed to doing our part in preserving our planet.
